Awen ("AH-wen") is a Welsh word that is formed by combining the two words, aw, meaning ‘a fluid, a flowing’, and en, meaning ‘a living principle, a being, a spirit, essential’.
To me, this means putting inspiration, principles, ideas and the essentials into motion and helping them flow. This is what every individual and organization needs to reach their dreams and find success!
I started working for my parents at their business when I was about 10 (1985), and then got my first job at the age of 13. Since then I have worked in a number of industries, including: health care, information technology (in oil and gas), retail, security, and office administration. In 2009, I found my niche when I began working in the non-profit sector after volunteering since 1988. This is the industry that I feel truly at home in and I want to help nonprofits reach their goals!
I am an innovator and am always looking for creative ways to address gaps in services. As the Chair of Autism Calgary's Board of Directors (2008 - 2018), I was instrumental in the development of programs and services for young adults on the autism spectrum which previously were not available in Southern Alberta. Also, I was involved in the development of two programs that assist adults on the autism spectrum find gainful employment in technology: Meticulon and Spectrum Advantage.
I am currently serving on the Boards of Airdrie P.O.W.E.R. and the Airdrie & District Hospice Society, both of whom have benefitted from the 4-hour planning sessions, as well as my creative thinking.
Over the past decade, I have assisted in the start-up of non-profit organizations, including writing bylaws, facilitating provincial incorporation, grant development, fundraising, program development, networking, advocacy, and developing effective volunteer programs.
I have also facilitated the research, development and implementation of database solutions, non-profit management and volunteer program management.
Imagine what I could do for your organization!
Since 1988, I have volunteered in a number of capacities, including:
Can a strategic planning session really take only 4 hours? Yes, it can! Many Board members do not have time to spend 1 or 2 days on strategic planning retreats, so I have condensed it to a 4 hour intensive planning session.
Starting where the 4-hour strategic planning session left off, it's time to get down to business! This is the time to assign priorities, and polish up the business plan so that it can be used.
You've got a passion, some people on board, and a vision. Now what?
I will demystify the processes of developing a mission statement, writing bylaws, incorporation, and obtaining charitable status.
Is your established organization experiencing mission drift, burnout, complacency or just a need for a change? With a change of Board members, staff, or even the need within the community, established nonprofits can find themselves drifting. Each situation is unique, and I can help you rekindle that passion in a way that works for your organization.
With the operation of a busy nonprofit, grantwriting can be time-consuming, if not just a little bit painful! It is also a necessary part of obtaining funding for your organization. Let me help you with the content-writing for your upcoming grants.
